The 'Party on the Bridge', a celebration of the 650 anniversary of the
Chantry Chapel, which took place on 15 July, in unbroken sunshine, was a splendid team effort. Masterminded by Terry Hollands, it brought together volunteers from Wakefield's Civic and Historical Societies, and members of both Anglican and Nonconformist churches together with members of the
Friends of Wakefield Chantry Chapel.

There was a flower festival inside the Chantry with arrangements by volunteers from St Austin's RC Church, St Helen's Church, St Paul's Church, Wakefield Cathedral, Wakefield Baptist Church, Flanshaw United Reformed Church, West Wakefield Methodist Church, and Wakefield Soroptomists. On the bridge, which was bedecked with balloons, bunting and gazebos, were stalls selling hot and cold food, plants and flowers, jewellery, souvenirs and Free Trade clothing and foodstuffs.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Wakefield, Councillor Darren Travis. A special service at noon was conducted by the Dean of Wakefield, the Very Reverend George Nairn Briggs. During the day there were musical entertainments in the Chantry by local groups, including Possibilities - a group for people with disabilities. Very possibly this was the most successful event the Chantry has ever seen - certainly the only one for which the local authority closed the bridge to traffic!!

A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has meant that a substantial scheme for the re-ordering of the Chantry was carried out in 2010. A new and level stone floor has been laid and the spiral staircase to the crypt has been repaired. The building now has a composting lavatory
and a small unit with sink and tea-making facilities.

The chapel was rededicated by the Lord Bishop of Wakefield, the Right Reverend Stephen Platten on 13 September when Simon Thurley, the Chief Executive of English Heritage, gave a short talk speaking appreciatively of the role of volunteers in maintaining historic buildings.

Requiem for Richard    A requiem mass for Richard Duke of York and his son Edmund, Earl of Rutland, who were killed in the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, took place on the anniversary of the battle
on 30 December 2010.
